Community Volunteer Emergency Response Unit

  • Expression of Interest Form

  • As we all know, the Byron Shire is a large, sprawling area, which can result in long wait times when an ambulance is required. We intend to create a volunteer-based emergency response unit, staffed by members of the community. This would essentially be a unit of first responders who would be able to administer first aid and stabilise a patient until an ambulance arrives. We would initially service Mullumbimby and surrounding areas (Jewish and non), with the view to expand eventually.

Volunteers will be trained and proficient in a variety of first aid skills, such as CPR; treating burns, snake & spider bites; allergic reactions + epi pen use; stroke/unconscious patient; defibrillator use; assisting choking babies/children.

The commitment would likely involve an initial period of several full days of training, spread over several months, as well as ongoing training of up to a few hours per month. Ideally, with numerous volunteers, each volunteer might expect to have 1-4 shifts per months - more or less, depending on availability.

There would also be opportunity for volunteers to work in roles which do not require the same training commitments or hands-on work, such as taking calls, admin work, as well as drivers/support staff.

We are seeking expressions of interest from anybody who might like to participate in this initiative. Please fill out the form below (with no commitment or obligation at this stage) and we will get back to you. Thank you.

  • * Note: all volunteers welcome, but we'd like to know whether your are Jewish for scheduling reasons, eg Shabbat, Public holidays...
