Chanukah – When Byron Shire Lights Up
There is something magical about Chanukah in Byron Shire. As summer arrives, Jewish homes across the region begin to glow with the warm light of the menorah.
Chanukah is a time to spread light. Before the holiday, menorahs, candles, and Chanukah guides are distributed so that every Jewish home can shine with the light of tradition and Jewish pride.

One of the highlights of the festival is Chanukah in the Park at the McGregor Family Carnival Grounds in Brunswick Heads. Families gather for an afternoon of fun with giant inflatables and activities for children and youth. Each child receives a special wristband with discounted access to the attractions. As evening falls, everyone gathers around the beautiful central menorah, handcrafted by cherished community member Gadi Cohen, for a communal lighting, words of Torah, dinner, singing, and, of course, fresh sufganiyot.
Another beloved tradition takes place on the shores of Byron Bay’s Main Beach, where locals, travelers, and visitors gather around a giant menorah overlooking the ocean for a public lighting.

Last year, only days after the terrorist attack in Bondi Junction, police suggested that we cancel the event. But the Jewish response to darkness is not to retreat—it is to add more light. Instead of scaling back, we made the celebration even bigger.
Community leaders, including the regional bishop and the Mayor of Ballina, joined in support. With words of inspiration and a clear stand against hatred, the gathering became a powerful expression of unity. As the evening drew to a close, Jews of all backgrounds danced around the glowing menorah to the song Am Yisrael Chai—affirming that despite all challenges, the light of our people endures, as we look forward with hope to the coming of the final redemption.
In Byron Shire, Chanukah is more than a festival of lights—it is a celebration of resilience, Jewish pride, community, and the enduring power of light over darkness.
