Sukkot in Byron Shire

Among the Trees and Stars of Byron Shire

Where nature, community, and Jewish tradition come together beneath the open sky.

A Festival at Home in Nature

There is something especially fitting about celebrating Sukkot in Byron Shire.

Surrounded by forests, rolling hills, and open skies, the message of Sukkot feels right at home here. For one week each year, we leave our homes and enter the sukkah—a simple dwelling beneath the stars that reminds us of faith, gratitude, and the journey of the Jewish people through the wilderness.

In a place where nature is never far away, the sukkah becomes a beautiful reminder of our connection to Hashem, to one another, and to the blessings that surround us.

The First Sukkah

Our first Sukkot in Byron Shire took place during COVID.

Together with several travelers, we built a small sukkah from bamboo gathered in the Chabad House yard. Inspired by techniques learned from craftsmen in Indonesia, it was built entirely from natural materials—even the pegs were made of bamboo, and the schach was gathered from the yard itself.

The result was unlike anything we had ever seen.

"A sukkah crafted from nature, nestled among the trees of Byron Shire."

The sukkah was breathtaking in its beauty. One of the travelers submitted photographs to Ynet, where it was featured among the world's most beautiful sukkot.

Growing Together

As our community has grown, so has our sukkah.

Yet each year we strive to preserve its natural spirit and unique character. What began as a small bamboo structure has evolved into a vibrant gathering place that welcomes locals, visitors, backpackers, travelers, and families from around the world.

Meals are shared, songs are sung, stories are exchanged, and friendships are formed beneath the canopy of the sukkah and the stars above.

The Festival on the Move

The celebration extends far beyond the walls of the Chabad House.

Each year, our mobile sukkah journeys throughout Byron Shire, bringing the joy of Sukkot to Jewish people wherever they may be. From local homes to travelers exploring the region, the Sukkah on Wheels creates opportunities to shake the Four Species and connect with the spirit of the holiday.

As the festival approaches, community members and visitors are also invited to order their own set of the Four Species through Chabad Byron Shire.
