Spreading Light Across the Shire
There is something truly magical about Chanukah in Byron Shire. As summer arrives and the days grow longer, Jewish homes throughout the region begin to glow with the warm and welcoming light of the Menorah.
Chanukah is a celebration of light, hope, and Jewish resilience. In the weeks leading up to the holiday, Menorahs, candles, and Chanukah guides are distributed throughout the community, helping ensure that every Jewish home can shine with the light of tradition and Jewish pride.
One small flame has the power to illuminate an entire home. Together, thousands of flames illuminate an entire community.
Chanukah in the Park
One of the highlights of the festival is our annual Chanukah in the Park celebration at the McGregor Family Carnival Grounds in Brunswick Heads. Families, locals, visitors, and travelers gather for an afternoon filled with excitement, laughter, and community spirit.
Children enjoy giant inflatables and activities, with special wristbands providing discounted access to the attractions. As evening falls, everyone gathers around the beautiful central Menorah, handcrafted by cherished community member Gadi Cohen, for a communal lighting, inspiring words of Torah, dinner, singing, and, of course, fresh sufganiyot.
A Menorah by the Sea
Another beloved Chanukah tradition takes place on the shores of Byron Bay's Main Beach. Against the backdrop of the ocean and setting sun, locals, backpackers, visitors, and travelers gather around a giant Menorah for a public lighting that brings Jewish pride and joy to the heart of Byron Bay.
The sight of the Menorah shining beside the sea creates a uniquely Byron Shire Chanukah experience, blending the beauty of the region with the timeless message of the festival.
Adding More Light
Last year, only days after the terrorist attack in Bondi Junction, there were concerns that public celebrations should be cancelled. Yet the Jewish response to darkness has always been to increase light.
Rather than scaling back, the community came together to make the celebration even stronger. Community leaders, including the regional bishop and the Mayor of Ballina, joined in solidarity and support. Their presence, together with heartfelt messages of unity and friendship, transformed the gathering into a powerful expression of courage and hope.
As the evening drew to a close, Jews of all backgrounds joined hands and danced around the glowing Menorah to the song Am Yisrael Chai, affirming that despite every challenge, the light of our people continues to shine brightly.
