Purim – The Holiday of Turnarounds
Purim is the holiday of “V’nahafoch Hu”—when everything can suddenly turn around for the good. A celebration of joy, costumes, and Jewish pride, Purim brings together local families, travelers, and visitors from across the region.
Each year in Byron Shire, the community gathers for a large themed celebration where children and adults alike dress up according to that year’s theme. A spacious venue comes alive with children’s activities and games, live entertainment, music, a generous buffet, the public reading of the Megillah, and, of course, traditional hamantaschen.
One Purim stands out in particular. Following severe flooding in the region, the venue we had booked was closed after being declared part of a disaster area. When asked whether the event could be postponed, we explained that Jewish holidays cannot simply be moved—we celebrate them at their appointed time.
After much persuasion and many efforts, Rabbi Tomer secured permission for the celebration to go ahead, despite the challenging circumstances. With electricity still unavailable, generators powered the jumping castle, music, slushie machines, barbecue, and sound system, while volunteers and travelers helped decorate and prepare the venue.
Then, just minutes before the celebration began, after more than three weeks without electricity, power suddenly returned to the area. For many, it felt like a small Purim miracle.
As Purim gave way to Shabbat, the celebrations continued at Chabad House with the travelers and guests who spent Shabbat together.
Every year Purim returns with a new theme, new costumes, and new memories. If you happen to be in the area, we invite you to discover this year’s location and join the celebration—because Purim in Byron Shire always finds a way to happen.
